President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose current term was set to expire on August 31, 2025.

This extension, which will now keep Adeniyi in office until August 2026, is aimed at allowing him to consolidate ongoing reforms and critical projects aligned with the administration’s strategic priorities.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged the CG’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service, expressing confidence that the extension would further strengthen the Service’s capacity in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.

Among the key initiatives Adeniyi is expected to oversee are the comprehensive modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, full implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate,” the statement read.

Since his appointment, Adeniyi has led various institutional reforms focused on digital transformation, transparency, and improved border management. His continued leadership is seen as critical to achieving continuity in policy direction, particularly in areas tied to Nigeria’s economic competitiveness and regional trade commitments.

The National Single Window Project, in particular, is expected to revolutionise port operations and reduce delays in cargo clearance, while the AfCFTA implementation underscores Nigeria’s role in deepening intra-African trade.

The extension reflects the administration’s commitment to effective leadership continuity and reform sustainability across strategic government institutions.

The decision takes effect immediately.
